Kayak the La Jolla Sea Caves

Join a kayak tour of the La Jolla Sea Caves, or rent a kayak and visit them on your own. With a tour, you’ll get all the training you need. There is no need to worry if you have never kayaked before. Children are welcome but be aware that you will likely end up doing most or all of the paddling. Slather on sunscreen as well, and be sure to reapply regularly. The sun reflects off the water, magnifying its effect.

View Spectacular Marine Life

San Diego is home to a wide range of aquatic creatures, including playful dolphins and majestic whales. If you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of them without ever leaving dry land. There are numerous hiking and walking trails along the coast; be on the lookout as you make your way along. Watch your step too, though, as some of the terrain can be a bit bumpy.

Take a Day Trip Across the Border

San Diego is just north of the Mexican border so it’s easy to visit our neighbors to the south for a day. Taxi fares are incredibly cheap; you can leave your car stateside as you explore Tijuana or Rosarito Beach, less than half an hour’s drive from the border. Keep your wits about you as the area isn’t nearly as safe as the US. Head back before the sun sets to maximize your safety while south of the border.

Go on a Bike Tour

San Diego is a fairly flat city – it is easy to get around on two wheels. There are numerous bike tour groups that will take you all over the city. Tours range from short half-hour jaunts to longer rides that take several hours. Choose the most appropriate option to meet your needs based on your skill and fitness levels. Be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen as the sun shines most days in San Diego.

Visit Old Town

Because of the city’s close proximity to Mexico, you’ll find Mexican influences throughout San Diego, but nowhere more so than in the Old Town district. Leave the kids at home so you can enjoy sampling delicious tequila and margaritas from the many bars in the area. Be sure to stop by the Old Town Mexican Cafe for some incredible fresh-made tortillas. You can watch the artisanal cooks make them right in the front window of the restaurant, providing entertainment while you dine.

Take in the Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter is the area of San Diego with the city’s best nightlife. Bars, lounges and nightclubs line the streets, so get dressed up and head out for a night on the town. Last call is at 2 a.m., so be sure to drink your fill before then. If you don’t want to dress to the nines, there are plenty of more casual options as well, helping you to avoid the strict dress codes at some of the nightclubs.

Have Some Fun at Balboa Park

Adjacent to the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park offers fun for all ages. The park is quite expansive, and it would take you several days to see everything, so plan on spending a fair bit of time here. From botanical gardens to playgrounds, you and your little ones will have a great time exploring the park. There is a free trolley that takes you throughout the grounds, letting you rest your tired feet when you don’t want to walk anymore.

Tour the USS Midway

One of the largest aircraft carriers in the US Navy’s fleet, the USS Midway calls San Diego home. Although it is no longer in commission as a military vessel, it has been expertly maintained over the decades. History buffs will love learning about the ship’s naval past. There are more than 60 exhibits on board the ship so be sure to allow plenty of time to explore them all.

Spend a Day at the Beach

San Diego, and Southern California in general, are known for their picturesque beaches. Don’t miss the chance to soak up some sun while you are here. Although the weather is typically warm, the water is quite cold, so be prepared for a bit of a shock when you first enter the ocean.
